USABA Northeast Regional Goalball Tournament Canceled

Posted March 13, 2020  USABA Updates

Dear USABA Member,

This past week of coronavirus news has been a whirlwind, causing disruption in our everyday lives and in the world of sports.

In light of these developing circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 coronavirus and after consultation with local organizers, health officials, and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC), the USABA Northeast Regional Goalball Tournament in Westmont, New Jersey, scheduled to take place April 18-19, has been canceled. The decision for cancellation was a difficult one, however, the health and well-being of our athletes, coaches, officials, and volunteers is, and always will be, the paramount priority of the U.S. Association of Blind Athletes. Our hope is that this is merely a one-time interruption of this premier annual event hosted by our longtime local partner, the Association of Blind Athletes of New Jersey (ABANJ).

We realize this event was one of a number of tryout events included in our selection procedures for the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. Updated selection procedures will reflect the cancellation of this event, and we encourage all teams affected by this cancellation to consider participating in the USABA Southeast Regional Goalball Tournament, May 29-31 in Smyrna, Georgia. As of today, the Southeast Regional Tournament will be held as scheduled. If the situation changes we will immediately relay that information to our membership.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during these trying times and for your continued support of blind sports.
