COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The U.S. Association of Blind Athletes (USABA) will host the 2025 Goalball National Championships in Colorado Springs from Friday, August 15, through Sunday, August 17, at the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind (CSDB). The event will gather the nation’s top athletes for three days of intense competition in the only Paralympic sport designed specifically for individuals who are blind or visually impaired.
Goalball is played by teams of three on a volleyball-sized court. All players wear blackout eye shades to ensure equal vision impairment, tracking a soccer-sized ball embedded with bells entirely by sound. Athletes use their bodies to block shots and launch the ball toward the opposing team’s goal. The sport is fast-paced, highly tactical, and delivers a unique sensory and athletic experience for both players and spectators.
“Goalball offers significant benefits to blind students by helping them develop their personalities, build confidence, and gain valuable life experience,” said Jaimie Valencia, CSDB Athletic Director. “This tournament gives our student-athletes the opportunity to be exposed to elite-level competition and draw inspiration from exceptional athletes, including members of the USABA team.”
The Championships will take place in CSDB’s newly updated gyms, which have received modern accessibility upgrades to better support athletes who are deaf, blind, or both.
USABA CEO Molly Quinn emphasized the event’s significance for the community. “Colorado Springs is the epicenter of Olympic and Paralympic sport in the U.S., and hosting Nationals here is an incredible opportunity to introduce more people to goalball,” said Quinn. “Once you’ve experienced it live, you can’t help but be inspired by the skill, strategy, and intensity these athletes bring to the court.”
The 2025 Goalball National Championships will feature men’s and women’s teams from across the country, including several Paralympic medalists. Matches are free and open to the public, offering an unmatched opportunity for the media and community to witness a thrilling sport that challenges perceptions of athleticism and ability.
